NJ FamilyCare Behavioral Health & Maternal Mental Health
NJ Division of Medical Assistance and Health Services with the NJ Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services
If I'm struggling emotionally after birth, what treatment and crisis support can I use?
What this is
NJ FamilyCare covers behavioral-health and substance-use treatment, not only screening. In the current integrated system your managed care plan is the main route to that care, using the plan's provider network.
Why it matters after birth
Depression, anxiety, trauma responses, and substance use can appear or worsen after birth. Treatment is a covered benefit, so this is care you are entitled to use rather than something to wait out.
You may qualify if
NJ FamilyCare members have behavioral-health and substance-use benefits. Crisis support through 988 is available by call or text no matter what coverage you have.
What you actually get
Behavioral-health and substance-use treatment through your plan's provider network. Your plan's Member Services must assist you in getting appointments. The 2026 managed care contract sets appointment targets: emergency care immediately, urgent care within 24 hours, and routine care within 10 days.
How long it lasts
Available while you are enrolled in NJ FamilyCare, which for pregnancy-pathway members includes the full 12-month postpartum period.
What it costs
Behavioral-health and substance-use treatment are covered NJ FamilyCare services. New Jersey does not publish a single universal member cost rule, so confirm with your plan.
How to use it
Call your health plan's Member Services and ask for help finding a behavioral-health provider and getting an appointment; the plan is required to assist. You do not need to wait for a crisis to do this. New Jersey also runs a maternal mental-health resource line at 1-800-328-3838.
What you'll need
Your NJ FamilyCare member information and the name of your health plan.
Important limitations
Coverage is not the same as availability. Provider network capacity varies, and clinicians with specific perinatal mental-health training may be limited in some areas. The contract's appointment targets are standards your plan must work to, not a guarantee that the first office you call has an opening.
How it works with other benefits
Your obstetric and primary care providers stay involved, and this care sits alongside your other NJ FamilyCare benefits. Crisis services operate independently of your plan.
Finding a provider or service
Use your MCO's behavioral-health provider directory and call Member Services for appointment assistance. New Jersey's maternal mental-health resource line, 1-800-328-3838, can also point you toward support.
Language & cultural access
Ask your plan's Member Services for language assistance when you request a behavioral-health appointment; NJ FamilyCare's main line, 1-800-701-0710, has live translators.
If you do not qualify
Crisis support through 988 is available to anyone by call or text, regardless of insurance, and New Jersey's maternal mental-health resource line is open to callers seeking direction.
Access in practice
Being covered and being able to use it are different things. This is what the sources say about actually reaching this support.
- Provider availability
- Practical access depends on provider network capacity, which varies by area.
- Provider rules
- Care is delivered through the managed care plan's behavioral-health provider network; Member Services must help with appointments.
- Appeals and help
- If your plan denies a behavioral-health service, the NJ FamilyCare appeal and fair-hearing routes apply; read the notice for its deadline.
In plain terms
What this means for you
This is treatment, not just a questionnaire at your check-up: counseling and substance-use care are covered, and your plan has to help you get an appointment within set timeframes. If things feel urgent tonight, 988 answers by call or text no matter what coverage you have.
Your next step
What to do next
For ongoing care, call your health plan's Member Services and ask them to help you get a behavioral-health appointment, naming that you are postpartum. For direction and resources, call 1-800-328-3838. In a crisis, call or text 988.
