New Jersey
New Jersey combines 12-month NJ FamilyCare coverage, Temporary Disability Insurance and Family Leave Insurance, expanded 2026 job protection, a Medicaid community-doula benefit, Family Connects NJ universal newborn nurse visits that are still rolling out county by county, evidence-based targeted home visiting, and an increasingly integrated Medicaid behavioral-health system. What you are covered for, what is actually available near you, which county you live in, what you have to file, and whether your job is protected are all separate questions here.
Start with your question
Health Coverage After Birth
Will I still have health coverage after my baby is born?
If you qualified for NJ FamilyCare through the pregnancy pathway, coverage is guaranteed through pregnancy and for 12 months after it ends, even if your income goes up.
Work & Leave
Can I take time off, and will I be paid?
New Jersey pays wage replacement through Temporary Disability Insurance and Family Leave Insurance, and since July 17, 2026 more workers on those benefits also have job protection. Pay and job protection are still two separate things.
Doula Support
Can I have a doula, and will it be paid for?
NJ FamilyCare covers community doula care for any pregnant, birthing, or postpartum member, no medical complexity required. You need a licensed practitioner's recommendation first, and your plan cannot require prior authorization.
Mental & Emotional Health
Where do I get help if I am struggling after birth?
NJ FamilyCare covers behavioral-health and substance-use treatment, not only screening. Your health plan must help you get an appointment, and 988 answers in a crisis.
Home & Community Support
Can someone support me at home instead of another clinic trip?
Family Connects NJ offers free nurse home visits for newborns in active counties, and longer-term home-visiting programs run through Connecting NJ in every county.
Using Your NJ FamilyCare Benefits
I have coverage — how do I actually get an appointment, a ride, or an interpreter?
Your managed care plan is the day-to-day route to in-network providers, rides through Modivcare, free translation, and appeals. Appeal deadlines are short, so read any notice the day it arrives.
