State Medical Postpartum Coverage
Connecticut DSS
If immigration status kept me from Medicaid during pregnancy, can Connecticut still cover me after birth?
What this is
Connecticut created State Medical Postpartum Coverage for recently pregnant people who do not qualify for federal Medicaid because of immigration status and who were eligible for the HUSKY B Prenatal pathway. Effective April 1, 2023, it provides 12 months of state-funded postpartum coverage with the full HUSKY A benefit package. [CT-SM1, CT-SM2]
Why it matters after birth
Immigration status does not automatically mean a mother who received HUSKY B Prenatal loses health coverage when pregnancy ends. The state-funded program can continue comprehensive medical, preventive, dental and behavioral-health coverage for the postpartum year. [CT-SM1, CT-SM2]
You may qualify if
DSS says you may qualify if you do not qualify for Medicaid because of immigration status, your pregnancy ended within the applicable postpartum period, and you meet the other Medicaid-style rules, including the pregnancy income limit. The state page describes under 264% FPL; current 2026 HUSKY pregnancy charts use a 263% FPL program standard because limits are periodically updated. Always check the current official chart next to any dollar figure. [CT-SM2, CT-SM4]
What you actually get
Eligible members receive the full HUSKY A/Medicaid benefit package — not a limited maternity-only package. DSS specifically lists pregnancy and postpartum care, preventive care, dental care, behavioral health and other health-care services. [CT-SM2]
How long it lasts
Coverage ends on the last day of the last month of the 12-month postpartum period. It is continuous during that period even if income or family size changes; exceptions include moving out of state, death or voluntary disenrollment. [CT-SM2]
What it costs
This is state-funded postpartum medical coverage delivering the HUSKY A benefit package. The current consumer FAQ does not publish a separate premium schedule for this group, and TMO does not publish one. [CT-SM2]
How to use it
If you are already enrolled in HUSKY B Prenatal, DSS automatically assesses State Medical Postpartum eligibility when the end of pregnancy is reported; there is no separate postpartum application. To apply for HUSKY B Prenatal while pregnant, call Access Health CT at 1-855-805-4325 or use DSS application routes. [CT-SM1, CT-SM3]
What you'll need
The HUSKY B Prenatal application uses household, income, Connecticut-residency and pregnancy information. This pathway exists because the person does not qualify for federal Medicaid due to immigration status. [CT-SM3]
Important limitations
This profile applies to the state-funded pathway linked to HUSKY B Prenatal, not standard federal Medicaid HUSKY A postpartum. Moving out of Connecticut ends continuous state coverage. [CT-SM2]
How it works with other benefits
Health coverage is separate from CT Paid Leave and job protection. HUSKY services such as behavioral health and other covered benefits become available through the state-funded HUSKY A-equivalent package. [CT-SM2]
Finding a provider or service
Use the HUSKY Health Member Services and provider system. For eligibility questions, DSS directs people to Access Health CT at 1-855-805-4325. [CT-SM2]
Language & cultural access
The state publishes the postpartum FAQ in English and Spanish and DSS provides free interpreters. DSS says enrollment will not affect an application for citizenship, and DSS does not share state-funded coverage information with Immigration Services or DHS. [CT-SM1, CT-SM2]
If you do not qualify
Call Access Health CT to determine whether standard HUSKY, state-funded postpartum coverage, Covered Connecticut or a Marketplace plan applies. [CT-SM2]
In plain terms
What this means for you
If you received HUSKY B Prenatal because immigration status blocked regular Medicaid, Connecticut has a separate program designed to keep you covered for 12 months after pregnancy. You should not need a second postpartum application if DSS has the pregnancy-end information. [CT-SM1, CT-SM2]
Your next step
What to do next
If you are on HUSKY B Prenatal, report the birth or end of pregnancy and watch for the DSS notice confirming postpartum enrollment. If you are pregnant and not enrolled, call 1-855-805-4325 and ask specifically about HUSKY B Prenatal and State Medical Postpartum Coverage. [CT-SM1, CT-SM3]
