12-Month HUSKY Postpartum Coverage

Connecticut DSS / HUSKY Health

Will HUSKY keep covering me for a full year after my pregnancy ends?

ReadyLast verified September 16, 2026Policy status: Current · Effective April 1, 2022
What this is

Connecticut extends postpartum HUSKY coverage from the old two-month period to a full 12 months for eligible HUSKY A and qualifying HUSKY B members. The extension took effect April 1, 2022. HUSKY A postpartum members receive the full Medicaid benefit package, not just pregnancy-related services. [CT-M1, CT-M2]

Why it matters after birth

You can keep using health coverage for your own care throughout the postpartum year rather than losing coverage shortly after delivery. HUSKY includes preventive care, doctor and specialist visits, hospital care, behavioral health, dental care, prescriptions and other covered services. [CT-M3, CT-M6]

You may qualify if

For current 2026 HUSKY A pregnancy eligibility, DSS lists pregnant individuals with household income at or below 263% of the Federal Poverty Level. The current income chart is updated annually; pregnancy household-counting rules apply, so use the official chart or apply rather than estimating from take-home pay. To receive the 12-month postpartum extension, you must meet the applicable HUSKY pregnancy/postpartum eligibility rules. [CT-M3, CT-M4]

What you actually get

HUSKY A postpartum members receive the full HUSKY A/Medicaid benefit package. Standard HUSKY B postpartum members receive the full HUSKY B/CHIP benefit package. The coverage is not limited to OB care, so you can use it for your own physical, dental and behavioral-health needs during the postpartum year. [CT-M2]

How long it lasts

Coverage ends on the last day of the last month of the 12-month postpartum period. DSS says active postpartum enrollees receive continuous coverage during this period even if income or family size changes. Exceptions include moving out of Connecticut, death, or asking to disenroll. [CT-M2]

What it costs

HUSKY A is no-cost Medicaid coverage. HUSKY B can have premiums or copayments depending on the HUSKY B category. Because the postpartum extension can involve different HUSKY pathways, check your exact coverage type before relying on a cost-sharing statement. [CT-M3, CT-M4]

How to use it

If you are already enrolled in HUSKY A or the applicable HUSKY B pregnancy pathway, DSS automatically assesses postpartum eligibility after the birth or end of pregnancy is reported; a separate postpartum application is not required. If you are pregnant and not enrolled, apply through Access Health CT online or call 1-855-805-4325. [CT-M2, CT-M5]

What you'll need

Access Health CT determines eligibility using household, income, residency and applicable citizenship/immigration information. If you are already enrolled, make sure DSS/Access Health CT knows the pregnancy ended and keep your address and contact information current. [CT-M5]

Important limitations

The 12-month extension is not permanent HUSKY eligibility. When the postpartum year ends, DSS determines whether you qualify under another HUSKY category or need different coverage. The standard HUSKY A/B postpartum FAQ excludes the separate HUSKY B Prenatal immigration-status pathway, which is covered separately in State Medical Postpartum Coverage. [CT-M2]

How it works with other benefits

HUSKY pays for health services; CT Paid Leave can replace wages; CTFMLA can protect eligible time away from work. These are separate systems and can overlap. HUSKY doula, behavioral-health and transportation benefits are part of the health-coverage and navigation layer. [CT-M6]

Finding a provider or service

Call HUSKY Health Member Services at 1-800-859-9889 for benefits, providers or appointments. Behavioral health uses the HUSKY/CT Behavioral Health Partnership pathway at 1-877-552-8247. [CT-M6]

Language & cultural access

DSS and HUSKY provide free interpreter and language assistance. Access Health CT also provides Spanish and TTY/relay access. Provider-level language and cultural information is a separate question from program-level language access.

If you do not qualify

Access Health CT can screen for Marketplace coverage and Covered Connecticut. Covered CT can provide no-cost health and dental coverage plus non-emergency transportation to qualifying residents ages 19–64 with income up to 175% FPL who meet its Marketplace rules.

In plain terms

What this means for you

If you qualified for HUSKY during pregnancy, do not assume coverage ends after the first postpartum visit. Connecticut's postpartum extension can protect coverage for a full year, and income or family-size changes generally do not end it during that period. [CT-M2]

Your next step

What to do next

If you are pregnant and uninsured, apply through Access Health CT. If you are already on HUSKY, report the end of the pregnancy, keep your contact information current, and use Member Services for provider or benefit problems. Before the 12 months end, watch for the notice explaining what coverage comes next. [CT-M2, CT-M5, CT-M6]
