California
California combines 12-month postpartum Medi-Cal, a separate pregnancy-related Medi-Cal pathway up to 213% FPL, the Medi-Cal Access Program for pregnant people with higher income, Disability Insurance and Paid Family Leave, Pregnancy Disability Leave and CFRA job protection, statewide Medi-Cal doula coverage, broad behavioral-health coverage, county and local home visiting, Black Infant Health in participating jurisdictions, CPSP perinatal navigation and education, and a complex managed-care system. Four things stay separate here: full-scope versus pregnancy-related Medi-Cal, cash benefits versus job protection, statewide versus county-local service access, and whether a provider network actually has capacity for you.
Start with your question
Health Coverage After Birth
Will I still have health coverage after my baby is born?
Medi-Cal covers you for up to 12 months after a pregnancy ends, however it ended. Pregnancy Medi-Cal goes to 213% FPL and the Medi-Cal Access Program covers higher incomes, but full-scope and pregnancy-related coverage are not the same thing.
Work & Leave
Can I take time off, and will I be paid?
California pays you twice over: Disability Insurance while you recover, Paid Family Leave while you bond. Job protection is a third, separate layer through Pregnancy Disability Leave, CFRA, and FMLA.
Doula Support
Can I have a doula, and will it be paid for?
Medi-Cal has covered doula care statewide since January 1, 2023, including for people who have already given birth and for pregnancy loss. You do not need to chase a clinician's recommendation for your first set of visits.
Mental & Emotional Health
Where do I get help if I am struggling after birth?
Medi-Cal covers mental-health and substance-use treatment for pregnant and postpartum members, and 2026 guidance requires plans to address behavioral health through 12 months postpartum. Which entity provides it depends on whether your needs are non-specialty or specialty.
Home & Community Support
Can someone support me at home instead of another clinic trip?
The California Home Visiting Program funds several evidence-based models, but they are delivered by local and county programs, so which one you can use depends on where you live.
Culturally Specific Support
Is there support built for mothers like me?
Black Infant Health is a culturally specific California program, delivered in participating jurisdictions rather than everywhere in the state.
Perinatal Navigation & Education
Who helps me with nutrition, education, and referrals along the way?
The Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program adds nutrition, psychosocial and mental-health assessment, health education, referrals, and care coordination through participating Medi-Cal providers.
Using Your Medi-Cal Benefits
I have coverage — how do I actually get an appointment, a ride, or an interpreter?
Most members use a managed-care plan network, so the plan's directory and Member Services are your route to providers, rides, language help, and appeals.
