If I'm struggling emotionally after birth, where can I get treatment and screening?

What this is

Florida Medicaid includes mental-health and substance-use services. During the postpartum year, eligible mothers use their health plan for treatment. From the Start adds maternal-depression screening through pediatric settings, Healthy Start provides screening, support and referral, and 988 is statewide crisis support. [FL-B1, FL-B2, FL-B3, FL-B4]

Why it matters after birth

Depression, anxiety, trauma, substance use and other conditions can appear or change after delivery. Screening identifies a concern, but actual treatment may require a therapist, psychiatric prescriber, primary-care provider or crisis service. Screening and treatment are not the same thing.

You may qualify if

Medicaid-enrolled mothers can use covered mental-health and substance-use benefits subject to plan rules. Healthy Start is separate and can serve eligible families regardless of insurance or citizenship. [FL-B1, FL-HS1]

What you actually get

Medicaid covers behavioral assessment and treatment. From the Start calls for pediatric providers to screen mothers during the baby's early visits. Healthy Start screens, educates, supports and refers. [FL-B1, FL-B2, FL-B3]

How long it lasts

Medicaid treatment is available while you are eligible, including the 12-month postpartum period. Healthy Start commonly runs through the baby's first year with possible extension. 988 is available 24/7. [FL-B1, FL-HS1, FL-B4]

What it costs

Medicaid services follow plan rules. Healthy Start is free, and 988 is free.

How to use it

For routine treatment, call plan Member Services and ask for behavioral-health providers accepting new patients, and tell your OB, primary-care provider or pediatrician. In a crisis, call or text 988; in immediate danger, call 911 or go to the emergency department. [FL-B2, FL-B4]

What you'll need

Your Medicaid ID for plan-covered care, plus details about urgency. Healthy Start is reached through prenatal or infant screening and referral, and insurance is not required.

Important limitations

A positive screen is not treatment. Provider shortages, waits and network rules create real barriers. 988 crisis support is not a substitute for ongoing therapy or psychiatry.

How it works with other benefits

You can use Medicaid treatment together with Healthy Start coordination, doula support, home visiting and From the Start. Support programs do not replace licensed treatment.

Finding a provider or service

Use plan Member Services and provider search, Healthy Start/CONNECT for nonclinical referral, and 988 for crisis. The Florida Department of Health also points to 211 and local behavioral-health managing entities.

Language & cultural access

Plan and DCF language assistance is available. Ask providers about language, cultural experience, perinatal expertise and telehealth options.

If you do not qualify

Healthy Start and 988 are available regardless of insurance, and 211, county health departments and community health centers can help with low-cost care.

In plain terms

What this means for you

If you have Medicaid, postpartum mental-health care is part of your health coverage. A pediatric visit, a Healthy Start contact or a Member Services call can each be the entry point. [FL-B1, FL-B2]

Your next step

What to do next

If symptoms are affecting your daily life, contact your plan or clinician now and say you are postpartum. In a crisis or if you fear harm, call or text 988 or contact emergency services.
